My Morning Routine

I love learning about someone’s morning routine—it makes me feel like I understand that person just a little bit better. Like I know how that person ticks. And while my morning routine is far from perfect or super rigid—and it is always evolving—I do have a routine that I’m constantly trying to improve.

To me, those early morning hours when the rest of the world is still asleep are my favorite.

I try to wake up around 5:30 a.m. most days. Probably won’t happen this week since I’m sick (wah!) and I need all the sleep I can get.

Reading: I’ve heard if you want to become a morning person, you should really start out your morning with something you love. That’s primarily why I don’t go to the gym in the mornings. I get that that’s the only time that works for some people, but I would have a hard time staying motivated if the first thing waiting for me at 5:30 a.m. was the gym. So after I stumble out of bed and wash my face, I put on my ridiculous robe, make coffee, and settle in on the couch with a good book. I give myself a good thirty minutes to an hour of reading before I do anything else, really.

Breakfast + Bible time: Next, I usually make breakfast (or if I’m being honest, my loving husband usually does) and while I’m eating, I have a “quiet time,” meaning I read Scripture, pray, journal, and/or read a devotional book. This time is really important to me, and Aaron and I often read together. When I start my day off with God’s Word, I’m reminded of who I am, whose I am, and the grace and freedom out of which I live my life.

Walk Zoey: If it’s not too cold or rainy, we will try and walk Zoey in the mornings. This is usually just a short fifteen- to twenty-minute walk (she gets a longer one in the afternoons), but it also starts my day off right. Aaron and I love walking together; it’s often the time of the day where we catch up on what’s going on this week, meal plan, et cetera. It’s just a good time for us to touch base.

Tidy up: When we get back from our walk, I try to tidy up the kitchen and make our bed—you know, just generally pick up from the evening before and early morning. I don’t let myself clean for more than fifteen minutes because I usually don’t have time to clean longer than that! So setting a timer for fifteen minutes feels doable. Working from home, it’s really important to me that we keep the house clean during the day. It’s hard for me to get work done in a messy house, though it does happen sometimes.

Shower/get ready: Pretty self-explanatory, but I try to shower and get ready every work day morning so I’m not in my PJs for the day. This helps me stay motivated and awake. I’ll typically listen to an audiobook or podcast while I’m getting ready, and I’ve really come to find this time to be pretty therapeutic.

Green smoothie + at my desk: Most mornings, I make a green smoothie to drink at my desk while I start my work day and check emails. There’s something about having a green smoothie during this “life-work transition” that makes being at my desk at the same time every morning (8:30 a.m.) more bearable.

As I mentioned, this doesn’t happen perfectly every morning, but these are the priorities I try to focus on every work day when I wake up. I love getting my reading in first thing in the morning. What’s your morning routine? When do you read during your day? x
